Day 1: Arrival in Prague
We left Cesky Krumlov in the morning and embarked on a three-hour drive to Prague, the last stop on our three-week adventure. Opting for a less-traveled route, we enjoyed more of the Czech countryside and even drove past a massive, slightly creepy, nuclear plant.
Our first mission was to return the rental car. This turned out to be a nail-biter as navigating the airport was not easy. After a slightly stressful experience, the frazzled three took an Uber into Prague’s Old Town, where our apartment was located —very close to the main square.
We settled in and took walk around the city and stumbled upon a cool underground cocktail bar. Descending some stairs, we entered a dimly lit bar with only a few tables and a lone bartender. Without a menu, the bartender simply asked our preferences and surprised us with amazing creative drinks. Then, we found a nice Italian restaurant off the main square.
While James headed back to the apartment, we decided to grab a “quick” drink in the square and ended up snagging a fantastic table right in front of the famous Astronomical Clock. Two hours flew by as we watched the clock’s display and people-watched. We finally headed to bed at 1 a.m.—a late night compared to our usual 9 p.m. bedtime.
Day 2: Museums and Rooftop Views
The next day, James left early to visit the Army Museum and the Aviation Museum near the airport. Meanwhile, we cooked breaky at the apartment before heading out to tackle the city starting with the the National Museum. We planned to spend an hour or two there but ended up staying for three hours. The beautiful historic building housed a combination of Natural History and local historic exhibits, including a fascinating display on the 1950-1960 period when the Czech Republic was communist.
After meeting up with James for more exploration, we found an awesome rooftop bar with secret-style views. Our early dinner was at Krcma, a fantastic rustic restaurant with wood and stone décor. Everything in Prague was less expensive than in other countries we had visited, which was a pleasant surprise.
Day 3: Prague Castle and Final Adventures
On our last day before heading home, we were excited but also a bit sad to leave behind our daily adventures. Our itinerary included visiting Prague Castle, which encompasses the palace, St. Vitus Cathedral, the Royal Gardens, and the Golden Lane. Although crowded, it wasn't too overwhelming. The cathedral was impressive, and the Golden Lane was intriguing with its small houses where castle employees used to live. We ended our castle visit with a beautiful walk through the Royal Gardens and then headed to the Strahov Library, known for its well-preserved frescoes on the ceilings.
After taking an Uber back to the apartment for some chill time, Lori relaxed, Todd enjoyed a Czech beer downstairs, and James joined a tour of a hotel with an underground bunker system from the Cold War. We walked to the Black Angel’s Bar for a pre-dinner drink and ended up dining there, enjoying the cool vibe.
Before heading back to the apartment, we decided to walk to the famous St. Charles Bridge. Despite being busy, it was a wonderful experience seeing the river. On our way back, we found a quiet restaurant on a side street and enjoyed a glass of wine on the outdoor patio before heading home to start packing for departure.
Prague was a fantastic end to our family adventure, filled with history and beautiful people watching. We highly recommend visiting this vibrant city. The END (For now).
